Calluses

Normal Feet

The cause of calluses is excessive high pressure at a specific area of the foot - hard skin forms at these areas as a defence mechanism of the body to protect itself from the excessive pressure.

Some common causes of callus formation are high-heeled shoes, pointy shoes, shoes that are too small, obesity, flat feet, high arches, bunions, hammertoes, pushed out bones in the metatarsal area (fallen cross arches).

Treatment: The built in modules in the patients Pedikom Orthotics will re-distribute the body weight into the places where it should be. With this process it will relieve the excess pressure on the areas where calluses are formed, and they will eventually disappear. (Unless calluses are due to ill-fitting shoes)

Corns

Corns like calluses develop from excessive high pressure.

Corns are usually hard and circular, with a translucent centre. They contain a cone-shaped core, which can press on nerves causing pain. Corns usually form on the same places as calluses and they can get inflamed and painful with continued high pressure placed on the area, like running or walking for long periods, as well as with the constant rubbing of footwear.

Treatment: The built in modules in the patients Pedikom Orthotics will re-distribute the body weight into the places where it should be. With this process it will relieve the excess pressure on the areas where corns are formed, and they will eventually disappear. (Unless corns are due to ill-fitting shoes)
